Want an Allotment?

The cost of living is rising, now is a great time to start growing your own food as close to home as possible, but where can you do it? More Allotments could be part of the answer.

“If a local authority to which this Act applies is of the opinion that there is a demand for allotments in the district of such an authority, such local authority shall provide sufficient number of allotments and shall let such allotments to persons resident in the district of such local authority and desiring to take the same.”

If you want an Allotment but can’t find any in your area you’re not alone. Here are some ideas for change:

  1. Send us your details below and we will pass them onto your local authority.
  2. Download a copy of the Allotment Act 1928 HERE
  3. Write to your local commissioners and ask them to look at allotment provision in your area. Gently remind them of their obligations under the Act.
  4. Copy your letter to your MHK. The Permaculture Association (IOM) would love a copy too.
  5. Talk to neighbours and friends in your area and see if they will do the same.
  6. Look around your area and think of practical solutions to the problem; is there a bit of waste land or an accessible roadside field that may be available to let, could your community band together and create a communal garden?
  7. As your commissioners and MHKs respond to your request, why not plant a window box or a few tubs with salad leaves or start with cress on a window sill? You will be amazed what you can grow in a small space when you put your mind to it, then start dreaming of what you will grow on your allotment...

Below is the link to the BBC online coverage of allotments with lots of positive comments too.

The Permaculture Association is compilying a list of all those intersted in having an allotment. We have already surveyed all local commissioners with mixed feedback on their ability and willingness to meet demand. So far we have over 60 names and addresses of people across the island who do not have an allotment but want one. The plan is to feed this back to their commissioners, thus demonstrating demand and also to write a final report for circulation including to DOLGE.
